F<\/span>riends,\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some time back I was asked to provide a Bible\u00a0study that would include some documentation from the early Christian writers on their belief in a millennium, what is often called the 1000 year reign,\u00a0or the kingdom age of Messiah.<\/p>\n

\"ImageInterestingly enough while the Scriptures are filled with references\u00a0to an age to come that is described as peace and prosperity in all\u00a0the earth, the only direct reference we have in the Scriptures to a\u00a01000 year reign is in Revelation. But it is equally interesting that\u00a0the concept of a 1000 year reign is taught both in Christianity, in\u00a0Judaism, in Islam, in Zoroastrianism, and in other oriental religions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The belief in a Millennium is deeply embedded in religions around the world. With that in mind, I’ll share primarily from early Church\u00a0documentation. First, we need to\u00a0hear from the apostle John.<\/p>\n

“And I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key to\u00a0the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he lay hold of the\u00a0dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound\u00a0him for a thousand years; and threw him into the abyss, and shut it\u00a0and sealed it over him\u00a0so that he could not deceive the nations\u00a0any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these\u00a0things, he must be released for a short time.<\/p>\n

“Then I saw thrones,\u00a0and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw\u00a0the souls of those who had been beheaded because of the\u00a0testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who\u00a0had not worshipped the beast or his image, and had not received\u00a0the mark on their forehead or on their hand; and they came to life\u00a0and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead\u00a0did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This\u00a0is the first resurrection.” (Revelations 20:1-5)<\/p>\n

Notice that the term “a thousand years” is used four times. Though\u00a0the book of Revelation is filled with symbols, John seems to be\u00a0pretty clear on the issue of a thousand year period of time where\u00a0Satan is placed in captivity. But the question that we want to\u00a0answer is how did other early believers look at this idea of a\u00a0thousand year reign? Did they accept a literal one thousand year<\/p>\n

Did they accept a literal one thousand year\u00a0reign, or did they simply place this teaching in Revelation as\u00a0symbolic of perhaps something else?<\/p>\n

The answer is that nearly all the earliest Christian writers believed\u00a0in a literal thousand year reign. When I speak of the earliest\u00a0writers, I am including second and third generation disciples. This\u00a0would include those who were nearest to the apostolic age. Here\u00a0are some quotes:<\/p>\n

#1) Reference to Papias cited by Eusebius (Papias was a disciple\u00a0of the Apostle John and a friend of Polycarp; 60-130 ad); “Among\u00a0these things, Papias says that there will be a millennium after the\u00a0resurrection from the dead, when the personal reign of Christ will be\u00a0established on this earth.”<\/p>\n

#2) Justin Martyr (c. 160); “There was a certain man with us,\u00a0whose name was John, one of the apostles of Christ, who\u00a0prophesied by a revelation that was made to him, that those who\u00a0believed in our Christ would dwell a thousand years in Jerusalem.”<\/p>\n

#3) Hippolytus (c. 205); “The Sabbath is the type and symbol of\u00a0the future kingdom of the saints\u00a0when they shall reign with Christ\u00a0after He comes from heaven, as John says in his Revelation. For ‘a\u00a0day with the Lord is as a thousand years.'”<\/p>\n

#4) Tertullian (c. 207); “We do confess that a kingdom is promised\u00a0to us upon the earth, although before heaven. Only, it will be in\u00a0another state of existence. For it will be after the resurrection for a\u00a0thousand years in the divinely-built city of Jerusalem ‘let down from\u00a0heaven.'”<\/p>\n

#5) Victorinus (c. 280); “The true Sabbath will be in the seventh\u00a0millennium of years\u00a0when Christ will reign with His elect.”<\/p>\n

#6) Lactantius (c. 340); “Back then a mortal and imperfect man\u00a0was formed from the earth so that he might live a thousand years\u00a0in this world. So, now, from this earthly age is formed a perfect\u00a0man. And, being quickened by God, he will bear rule in this same\u00a0world through a thousand years.”<\/p>\n

#7) Irenaeus (c. 180); “The predicted blessing, therefore, belongs\u00a0unquestionably to the times of the kingdom, when the righteous will\u00a0bear rule, after their rising from the dead. It is also the time when\u00a0the creation will bear fruit with an abundance of all kinds of food,\u00a0having been renovated and set free. … And all of the animals will\u00a0feed on the vegetation of the earth. They will become peaceful and\u00a0harmonious among each other, and they will be in perfect\u00a0subjection to man. And these things are borne witness to in the\u00a0fourth book of the writings of Papias, the hearer of John, and a\u00a0companion of Polycarp.”<\/p>\n

#8) Commodianus (240); “The Amen sends flames on the nations.\u00a0And the Medes and Persians burn for a thousand years, as the\u00a0apocalyptic words of John declare. After a thousand years, they will\u00a0be delivered over to Gehenna. And he whose work they were is\u00a0burned up with them.”<\/p>\n

This is a sampling of how very literal the earliest disciples took the\u00a0belief of a thousand year reign. There were a few such as Origen\u00a0who denied a literal reign of Christ on the earth. These were in a\u00a0minority. Origen was later charged with heresy.<\/p>\n

That there was to be an age to come that precedes the\u00a0eternities of God is very much described in the Scriptures. Isaiah\u00a0is replete with descriptions of that age. Rather than go through the\u00a0many references, let’s consider this one;<\/p>\n

“The wilderness and the desert will be glad, and the Arabah will\u00a0rejoice and blossom; like the crocus. It will blossom profusely and\u00a0rejoice with rejoicing and shout of joy. The glory of Lebanon will be\u00a0given it the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They will see the glory\u00a0of the Lord, the majesty of our God.” (Isaiah 35:2)<\/p>\n

Then we have the teaching of Jesus. In the beatitudes, the Lord\u00a0said, “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.”\u00a0(Matthew 5:5) This is a near quote from the book of Psalms; “But\u00a0the humble will inherit the land and will delight themselves in\u00a0abundant prosperity.” (Psalm 37:11)<\/p>\n

An important point to keep in mind is that the Bible of the early\u00a0believers was simply the writings of Moses, of David, and the\u00a0prophets, along with whatever apostolic writings had been\u00a0collected. There was no need to rewrite all that God had to say\u00a0about an age to come. The Hebrew people very much believed in a\u00a0Messianic age. Their Bible was filled with descriptions of that\u00a0certain age.<\/p>\n

Perhaps we need to consider the word for ‘age.’ The Greek word is\u00a0‘aion.’ Aion<\/i> generally refers to a unit of time. (The context\u00a0determines its usage.) The Lord seemed to have the kingdom age\u00a0in view, when he said, “The sons of this age marry and are given in\u00a0marriage, but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age\u00a0and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in\u00a0marriage; for they cannot die anymore, because they are like\u00a0angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.” (Luke\u00a020:34-36)<\/p>\n

This statement by Jesus ties in with that John had to say about the\u00a0resurrection and the thousand year reign. He said, “Blessed and\u00a0holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these\u00a0the second death has but they will be priests of God and of Christ\u00a0and will reign with Him for a thousand years.”<\/p>\n

Then when John speaks of thrones being set up at the end of the\u00a0thousand year reign, Paul had this to say; “Do you not know that\u00a0we will judge angels? How much more the matters of this life.” (1\u00a0Co6:3)<\/p>\n

Just some things to think about.<\/p>\n
