{"id":3167,"date":"2010-03-31T15:59:48","date_gmt":"2010-03-31T20:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buddymartin.net\/blog\/?p=3167"},"modified":"2020-01-10T17:20:05","modified_gmt":"2020-01-10T17:20:05","slug":"of-his-fullness-we-have-received","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buddymartin.org\/blog\/2010\/03\/31\/of-his-fullness-we-have-received\/","title":{"rendered":"Of His fullness we have received&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em>&#8220;For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (John 1:16 nasb)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Journal,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A difficulty we have in interpreting Scripture is the tendency to read our own belief systems into the text. This is called <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">eisegesis<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, or &#8216;reading into.&#8217; The proper way to interpret Scripture is called <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">exegesis<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, or &#8216;reading out of.&#8217; (Most doctrinal failure is a problem of eisegesis.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">To properly understand what a Biblical writer means when he uses\u00a0a certain term, we have to understand how that term was used\u00a0during his time. When John says, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>&#8220;For of His fullness we have all\u00a0received, and grace upon grace,&#8221;<\/em><\/span> we need to know how the term\u00a0&#8216;<em>fullness<\/em>&#8216; was used at that time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/buddymartin.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Resurrection.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3189\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"Resurrection\" src=\"http:\/\/buddymartin.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Resurrection.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>The Greek word &#8216;<em>pleroma<\/em>&#8216;\u00a0means &#8216;that which fills,&#8217; and it comes from &#8216;pleroo&#8217;, or, &#8216; to fill with a content.&#8217; As used by the gospel writers, <em>p<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>leroma <\/em>had a two-fold meaning. It meant that believers have been brought to fullness in Christ&#8217;s\u00a0sphere of life. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this case there is nothing we need to do to be any closer to God, than being &#8216;in Christ.&#8217; This fullness of our sphere of relationship takes place in the new birth. It is not some later added\u00a0spiritual experience. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The term also means believers are filled absolutely by the person\u00a0of Christ as the Giver. No believer has more of Christ than another\u00a0believer. If of His fullness we have <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">all <\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">received, then there is nothing else we need to receive.\u00a0It is here that we get the idea of Christ living out His life in us. Paul had this idea in mind, when he said, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>&#8220;I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now life in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.&#8221;<\/em> (Gal2:20)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Then you had the nonliteral use of pleroma or pleroo by the gospel\u00a0writers which was, &#8220;to fill up to a specific measure.&#8221; or, &#8220;to fulfill a divine demand or claim.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>We see this when Jesus speaks to the rejecting Jewish leadership&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8230; saying, <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;Fill up (pleroo), then, the measure of the guilt of your\u00a0fathers.&#8221;<\/span><\/em> (Matt23:32) This meant that they would become completers\u00a0of all those who killed the prophets in times past. He goes on to say, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;Upon you will fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel, to the blood of\u00a0Zechariah.&#8221; <\/span><\/em>(V35)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In coming back to how this term applies to the new covenant, let&#8217;s\u00a0go another step. Paul says, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>&#8220;Owe nothing to anyone except to love\u00a0one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled (pleroo) the law.&#8221; <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Paul is saying that the love of God that is poured out in our hearts in the new birth, is now the governing principle of the new covenant, and that by walking in the Spirit of love we automatically fulfill, or reach the full goal of the Law of Moses.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Paul&#8217;s point is that Christ has removed any need for performing\u00a0rituals. Anyone can perform a ritual, but only those truly born of\u00a0God&#8217;s Spirit have the capacity to fulfill the love walk.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>There is a final sense in the word &#8216;pleroma&#8217; which has to do with\u00a0completeness, or to finish up a thing.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> This is a very important\u00a0concept, since it relates back to our original reference Scripture.\u00a0Listen again;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em> &#8220;For of His fullness (pleorma; or, &#8216;completeness&#8217;) we\u00a0have all received.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Again listen carefully to Paul; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>&#8220;For in Him [Jesus] all the fullness [pleroma] of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete [pleroo], and He is the head over all rule and authority.&#8221;<\/em> (Col2:9,10) <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Paul&#8217;s emphasis is our completeness in Christ. Completeness means there is nothing you can add to make it any more complete.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Children of the Great I AM. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">At the very moment of the new birth, a believer is made complete in\u00a0Christ. No one can take from that. Nor is there anything to add to\u00a0that. All the apostles agreed on this issue of our completeness.<a href=\"http:\/\/buddymartin.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Be-still.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3193\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"Be still\" src=\"http:\/\/buddymartin.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Be-still.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This is the sum and substance of the new covenant. And it is\u00a0because of this sum and substance, that John said we are given <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8220;grace upon grace.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Grace upon grace means that at no time in a\u00a0believer&#8217;s life will he or she be able to get beyond God&#8217;s redeeming grace.\u00a0Is that what it means? Hear again the apostle;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>&#8220;In Him we have\u00a0redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our sins,\u00a0according to the riches of His grace, which He *lavished* on us, in\u00a0all wisdom and insight.&#8221;<\/em> (Eph1:7,8)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The key word is &#8216;<em>lavished<\/em>.&#8217; Perisseuo means a super abundance, or\u00a0be over and above anything needed or required. God can lavish\u00a0grace on all His children because we have received the fullness of\u00a0Christ. We are children of the Great I AM.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The struggle<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This continued to be a struggle for the early believers just as it is for many today. With them you had the judaisers on one hand, who said you must fulfill the law of Moses, and, on the other hand, you had the gnostics and philosophers who had plenty of additions. These kinds of systems have always been around.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In coming against the gnostics who were troubling the young\u00a0believers, John had this to say; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>&#8220;Whoever confesses that Jesus is\u00a0the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.&#8221; <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><strong>He then says,<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/em><em>&#8220;By this, love is perfected (brought to completion) with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">as He [Christ] is, so\u00a0also are we in this world.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/em> (1John4:15,17)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">John is bringing out another view of our relationship to God. He\u00a0says that Christ perfectly represents every believer in heaven. And\u00a0this is where our salvation lies. You can also refer to this as the life exchange of the cross. Christ took our life to Himself in His death on the cross, and, He, in turn, gave us His perfect life to be our standing with heaven.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">There is so much more to be said but I hope you are getting the picture. But here are a couple more just for good measure:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>&#8220;There is no fear in love; but perfect casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears [punishment] is not perfected in love.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Then how about this one:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>&#8220;For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days &#8230; For I will be merciful to their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.&#8221;<\/em> (Heb8:10- 11)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Well, have you received the fullness of Christ? Think about it.
